These four pieces are based on re-using vintage paper stencils that were used in the 1950's in Japan to screen-print the designs on kimonos. These finely cut paper stencils are called Katagami and are very rare and a one
off design.

Each of the art pieces has two layers. The top layer is the actual paper stencil design including the original production notes written in chalk
around the edges. The bottom layer is my abstract painting influenced by Japanese styling and characters.

The effect I have created is to look through the mesh of the paper stencil and see the abstract work underneath as well as seeing the original designs.

The original designs in the paper stencils are of flower motifs that were popular in Japanese kimonos during the 1950's.
